Maki-e incense container “Kobushi”

This incense container depicts the white blossoms of the kobushi (northern Japanese magnolia) flower, which blooms in early spring before other trees. The surface is coated with gold powder and then decorated with such materials as eggshells, dry lacquer powder, colored lacquer, and faceted gold, in various techniques to express the floral design.
